How to transfer information from one pc hard drive running windows xp to a portable external hardrive?

Information may be used in the future but on a pc using windows vista o/s will there be any complications accessing info on a different operating system? How to transfer information from one pc hard drive running windows xp to a portable external hardrive?this hard drive couldn't read Vista files but Vista will be able to read these (backward compatible)

what about your programs? they will have to be re-installed to run with Vista, IF the version is good enough, or you will have to get newer ones of everything. (They're not in it to LOSE money)

think about this scenario: get Norton Ghost or this free cloner

CLONE only your operating system files. Then clean out all the junk from your old drive. Then copy the things you want to keep with DRAG %26amp; DROP.(in directory size chunks)..this has the effect of defragging the files (which cloning would not).

This leaves you a good working XP with programs that run with XP and maybe not with Vista, that you dual-boot into any time. IF the new drive is huge you cold let Vista have half.

Not a lot more work than plain copying, but lot more functionality.

Delete all but the OS and drivers off the old drive ....How to transfer information from one pc hard drive running windows xp to a portable external hardrive? It depends of the kind of data.

Generally you could copy the data files ad then format the drive in the old pc.

If the data are managed by a particular kind of software, is better to export the data and import in a new version of the software in the new os (before cancel the old drive)

bye

fedeHow to transfer information from one pc hard drive running windows xp to a portable external hardrive?Well you got two options. You can delete all the files you have already or move them to a external hardrive like you said. so if you have windows xp, you would first want to select the files and highlight them. Then you want to right click them and it should bring up a menu of options. One of them should say "Move to..." then select it and choose the seperate drive and the movement should begin. Hope this helpedHow to transfer information from one pc hard drive running windows xp to a portable external hardrive?
yeah it all depends on what you need most now vista and Xp will install things in very different places. But you can just transfer anything you want from your computer to the harddrive though. Good luck.
