What questions/ information are new employers allowed to ask former employers about?

Is there any legality in the information former employers are allowed to give to new employers who call them for a reference? What questions/ information are new employers allowed to ask former employers about?in the US there are NO laws that limit what truthful information may be released.....
in some states all the employer has to do is reasonably believe what they say is the truth.

many employers as a matter of "policy" (NOT law) only release dates of employment and job titles.

where do people get the idea that it is illegal to be honest? What questions/ information are new employers allowed to ask former employers about? It largely depends on the country/province/state they are in - and the laws differ greatly. With regard to reference checks, companies generally have their own policies about what information, if any, they will give out without a court order. What questions/ information are new employers allowed to ask former employers about? They only have to verify that you worked for them and give the dates of your employment. - anything negative you can use against them as slander if you don't get the job
