- How others countries reacted
- The effect Kristallnacht had on Jews
Things like this. I want to know more, but I cannot think of any other specific things that I need to know. So, if you could just give me information on Kristallnacht, that would be great.
Thank you,
Katelyn.Could someone give me information on Kristallnacht during the Holocaust? The topic is covered in various volumes. For starters I would go to Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer and then move on from there. Your local Public Library likely has a number of volumes just waiting to be read.Could someone give me information on Kristallnacht during the Holocaust?Because of previous events, Germany was full of foreign journalists, the reporting of events as they unfolded might actually be a milestone in modern journalism.
Every event was reported as it was actually happening and widely reported by foreign journalists from everywhere.
And these reports sent shock waves around the world.
The Times of London wrote at the time: "No foreign propagandist bent upon blackening Germany before the world could outdo the tale of burnings and beatings, of blackguardly assaults on defenceless and innocent people, which disgraced that country yesterday."
Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill's biographer wrote that no event in the history of German Jews between 1933 and 1945, or anywhere else for that matter, was so widely reported as it was happening.
Kristallnacht sparked international outrage.
It totally discredited pro-Nazi movements in Europe and North America, leading to eventual decline of their support. Many newspapers condemned Kristallnacht.
The United States recalled its ambassador (but did not break off diplomatic relations) while other governments severed diplomatic relations with Germany in protest.
The British government immediately approved the Kindertransport program for refugee children.
Kristallnacht also marked a turning point in relations between Nazi Germany and the rest of the world.
Germany had shown her true colors and it wasn't pretty.
What effect did it have on the Jews?
SA stormtroopers and civilians busted into the homes and shops and places of business, while there were men, women, children, toddlers, babies, elderly ... all present.
They were completely ransacked, they destroyed buildings with sledgehammers, leaving the streets covered in pieces of smashed windows.
Ninety-one Jews were killed.
30,000 Jewish men were taken to concentration camps.
They were tortured for months, with over 1,000 of them dying.
Around 1,668 synagogues were ransacked, and 267 set on fire.
In Vienna alone 95 synagogues or houses of prayer were destroyed.
What effect did it have on the Jews?
In less than 48 hours at least 30,000 Jews had lost the males in their families, even the ones that survived torture - the rest certainly did not last the rest of the Holocaust, they lost their business, their personal belongings, their places of worship, their homes, their villages .... many lost their lives.
And this was ONLY the FIRST 48 hours.
I seriously doubt any of them thought they would survive the week if they stayed in Germany.
